iPhone 17 Series Tipped to Feature 120Hz Displays—But Not All May Get Full ProMotion
Leaks suggest that Apple’s entire iPhone 17 lineup will finally adopt 120Hz refresh rate displays, but there's a catch—not all models may feature ProMotion.
While ProMotion has traditionally defined Apple’s high refresh rate technology with adaptive scaling from 10Hz–120Hz (and even 1Hz–120Hz on the iPhone 14 Pro and newer), the term encompasses more than just hitting 120Hz. It includes LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) technology, which enables dynamic refresh rate adjustment to conserve power—especially useful for features like Always-On Display (AOD).
According to rumors:
iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air are expected to get standard 120Hz panels, likely with fixed refresh rate steps (e.g. 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz) without LTPO.
iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max should retain LTPO ProMotion displays, offering full adaptive refresh and AOD functionality.
iPhone 17e, set to launch in early 2026, may still lag behind with a 60Hz display, though this remains unconfirmed.
With LTPO tech now available in some mid-range Android phones, Apple’s move to bring 120Hz to the base models is a welcome, if overdue, step. However, the ProMotion experience may remain exclusive to the Pro lineup.
