Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Enters Prototype Testing: Launch Expected in 2026
The long-rumored foldable iPhone is finally taking shape. According to a new Digitimes report, Apple began prototype testing for its first foldable phone last month. The prototype phase is expected to wrap up by the end of 2025, after which the device will move into the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) stage.
If development stays on track, Apple could unveil the foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 lineup in September 2026.
The report also states that Apple has paused work on its foldable iPad due to manufacturing challenges and low consumer interest.
Rumored specs for the foldable iPhone include a Samsung-made 7.8-inch OLED display with an under-display camera, a side-mounted Touch ID (no Face ID), and a nearly invisible crease. It's expected to be extremely slim—just 9 to 9.5mm when folded.
Apple is said to be using a titanium alloy frame and a liquid metal hinge for improved durability. However, all this innovation comes at a cost—early estimates suggest a price tag between $2,100 and $2,300.
