Ekiti Court Sentences Two Kidnappers to Death for Abducting NYSC Staff Member as DSS Secures Major Conviction
An Ekiti State High Court has sentenced two convicted kidnappers to death by hanging for the abduction of a staff member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking another major legal victory in Nigeria's ongoing fight against kidnapping and violent crime.
The judgment, delivered by Justice Lekan Ogunmoye at the Ekiti State High Court I in Fajuyi, Ado-Ekiti, concluded a high-profile case that began with the kidnapping of an NYSC employee in April 2022.
Two Convicted, One Acquitted
The court found Ibrahim Abubakar and Abdullahi Abubakar guilty of kidnapping and sentenced both men to death by hanging in Suit No. HAD/124C/2022.
A third defendant, Usman Abubakar, was discharged and acquitted after the court ruled that prosecutors failed to establish his involvement beyond reasonable doubt.
How the NYSC Staff Member Was Kidnapped
The case stemmed from the abduction of Omoboade Adesina, a female staff member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ekiti State, who was kidnapped on April 22, 2022.
Following the incident, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) launched an extensive investigation that led to the arrest of the suspects. The agency subsequently prosecuted the case before the Ekiti State High Court.
Justice Praises DSS Investigation
While delivering the verdict, Justice Ogunmoye commended the professionalism and investigative efforts of the DSS, stating that the prosecution successfully proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt.
The judge specifically highlighted the importance of the identification parade and the analysis of Call Data Records (CDRs), describing both as critical pieces of evidence that directly linked the convicted kidnappers to the crime.
According to the court, the strength of the forensic and investigative evidence played a decisive role in securing the convictions.
Another Major Victory Against Kidnapping
The ruling represents another significant milestone for the DSS in its nationwide campaign against kidnapping, terrorism, and other violent crimes.
The conviction follows a series of recent courtroom successes by the security agency. Just days earlier, a Sokoto State High Court sentenced three individuals to death over terrorism-related offences and cross-border arms trafficking in another DSS-prosecuted case.
The agency has also secured convictions against kidnappers and other criminal suspects in several states, including Kogi, reinforcing ongoing efforts to strengthen security and ensure that offenders face justice.
As Nigeria continues to battle rising cases of kidnapping and insecurity, the Ekiti judgment sends a strong message that perpetrators of violent crimes will be held accountable under the law.
