From Hackathon Dream to Multi-Million Naira Deal: Nigerian AI Startup YarnGPT Acquired by Bluechip Technologies

In a landmark moment for Africa's growing artificial intelligence ecosystem, Nigerian technology giant Bluechip Technologies has acquired YarnGPT, a local AI startup that specializes in converting text to speech using Nigerian accents and indigenous languages.

The acquisition, announced at the 2026 Bluechip Data and AI Summit, is being celebrated as more than a business transaction. Many industry observers see it as a powerful example of how African innovators can build world-class technology by addressing local challenges.

YarnGPT's journey began in 2023 when its founder, Saheed Azeez, a graduate of the University of Lagos, emerged as the first runner-up at the Bluechip Data and AI Hackathon. What started as a promising hackathon project has now evolved into a commercially valuable AI solution worthy of acquisition by one of Africa's leading technology firms.

Unlike many global artificial intelligence tools designed primarily for Western users, YarnGPT focuses on African audiences. The platform can convert text into speech using Nigerian-accented English as well as indigenous languages including Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa, making digital content more accessible and culturally relevant to millions of people.

Speaking during the summit, Bluechip Technologies CEO, Kazeem Tewogbade, explained that the acquisition aligns with the company's broader strategy of expanding its technology ecosystem through innovation, product development, and strategic investments. YarnGPT now joins Bluechip's growing portfolio of products, including Bluechip Data Platform, Cribro, BluPrime, and CashComplete.

Industry experts believe the deal sends a strong message to Africa's startup community. Rather than simply replicating foreign technologies, African entrepreneurs can develop solutions tailored to local realities while still attracting investors, customers, and acquisition opportunities.

Bluechip co-founder, Olumide Soyombo, highlighted what he described as Africa's biggest advantage in the global AI race: its youthful and rapidly expanding technology talent pool.

According to Soyombo, while Africa may not yet rival developed nations in building massive AI infrastructure, it possesses a generation of creative innovators capable of developing impactful solutions for both local and global markets.

Founded 18 years ago, Bluechip Technologies currently operates across nine African countries and serves more than 50 corporate clients. The acquisition of YarnGPT marks a significant step in the company's ambition to strengthen its position in AI product ownership and development.

Beyond the financial and business significance of the deal, many see it as an inspiring success story for young African developers. It demonstrates how a simple idea, fueled by innovation, persistence, and local relevance, can grow from a competition project into a valuable technology company.
