Lagos Government Targets Completion of 2,000+ Housing Units Before End of Sanwo-Olu Administration
The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling the state's housing deficit by promising to complete more than 2,000 affordable housing units before the end of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration.
The housing projects, located at the Abraham Adesanya Extension in Ajah and LagosHoms Phase II in Sangotedo, Ibeju-Lekki, are expected to provide thousands of Lagos residents with access to quality and affordable homes.
Housing Commissioner Inspects Ongoing Projects
Speaking during an inspection tour of the construction sites on Thursday, the Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, urged contractors to accelerate work and meet agreed delivery timelines.
He stressed that the state government is closely monitoring every stage of the projects to ensure transparency, quality construction, and value for public funds.
According to the commissioner, the developments are being executed through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangements designed to boost affordable housing across Lagos State.
Government Intensifies Monitoring of Contractors
Akinderu-Fatai disclosed that several major housing schemes are currently under construction across the state as part of the government's long-term strategy to reduce the housing shortage.
He, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of work at some of the project sites.
«"It is the intention of this government to ensure that these projects are completed as quickly as possible before the end of this administration," he said.»
The commissioner revealed that technical challenges had been identified and assured residents that the ministry would work with contractors to resolve them without further delays.
Contractors Face Sanctions for Delays
The Lagos State Government warned that contractors who fail to meet project deadlines could face sanctions or even replacement.
Akinderu-Fatai said the government has fulfilled its funding obligations and expects contractors to deliver according to contract terms.
«"If the government has provided the necessary funding and a contractor is still not delivering as expected, we will take appropriate action. Contractors must cooperate with the government's determination to complete these projects," he stated.»
Inflation Slowed Construction Progress
The commissioner explained that the projects were originally expected to be completed nearly three years ago, but rising inflation and the sharp increase in construction material costs significantly affected progress.
He noted that contractors requested cost reviews and project extensions due to economic realities, adding that those issues have now been addressed.
With renewed efforts and increased supervision, some of the housing estates could be ready for handover between October and November if construction progresses as planned.
Sanwo-Olu Administration Prioritizes Affordable Housing
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's administration has continued to prioritize affordable housing as part of its broader infrastructure development agenda.
The government says completing the ongoing housing projects will not only provide decent accommodation for thousands of residents but also stimulate economic growth and improve living standards across Lagos State.
As construction accelerates, many prospective homeowners will be watching closely to see whether the promised housing units are delivered on schedule before the current administration concludes its tenure.
