Motorists Demand Cheaper Petrol as Global Crude Oil Prices Fall
Thousands of Nigerian motorists and commuters are urging the Federal Government and petroleum marketers to reduce petrol prices following the recent decline in global crude oil prices.
The demand comes after Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, dropped sharply as tensions in the Middle East eased. Many Nigerians expected the reduction in crude prices to immediately reflect at filling stations, but pump prices remain stubbornly high.
Crude Oil Prices Drop After Middle East Tensions Ease
Global oil prices surged earlier following military tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, creating fears over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world's most important oil shipping routes.
However, with geopolitical tensions easing, Brent crude has fallen from its recent highs to around $74 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also declined below $70 before recovering slightly.
Despite this, Nigerians are still buying petrol for between ₦1,200 and ₦1,400 per litre, depending on the location.
Dangote Refinery Cuts Petrol Price
In a move welcomed by consumers, Dangote Refinery reduced its gantry price by ₦50, bringing it down to ₦1,125 per litre.
Importers have also recorded a slight reduction in landing costs, raising expectations that retail pump prices will soon decline nationwide.
Nigerians Express Frustration Across States
Motorists in Kano, Rivers, Borno, Taraba, Kwara, Benue and several other states say fuel prices increased almost immediately when crude oil prices rose, but marketers have been slow to reduce prices now that international oil prices are falling.
Commercial drivers say the high cost of petrol has drastically reduced their daily profits while forcing them to increase transport fares, leaving passengers struggling with the rising cost of living.
Many private car owners have also reduced vehicle usage due to expensive fuel.
Why Petrol Prices Have Not Dropped
The Executive Secretary of the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), Clement Isong, explained that crude oil prices alone do not determine the pump price of petrol.
According to him, there is usually a delay between changes in crude oil prices and the cost of refined petroleum products.
Experts Identify Other Factors
Energy experts say several factors determine petrol prices in Nigeria, including:
- Exchange rate fluctuations
- Refining costs
- Transportation and logistics
- Distribution expenses
- Taxes and government policies
- Existing fuel inventories
Professor Wumi Iledare noted that while lower crude prices may eventually reduce fuel costs, there is no guarantee petrol prices will return to previous levels unless other economic factors also improve.
NNPCL Explains Pricing
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) says petrol prices in Nigeria are now determined by market forces under the deregulated downstream sector.
According to the company, retail prices depend on product acquisition costs, foreign exchange rates, transportation, distribution expenses and marketers' individual operating costs.
NNPCL added that it continues to review its prices in line with prevailing market realities while ensuring adequate fuel supply across the country.
Will Nigerians Soon Pay Less for Petrol?
Industry analysts believe that if global crude oil prices remain stable and the naira improves against the dollar, Nigerians could begin to see gradual reductions in petrol prices.
However, they caution that significant price cuts may take time because marketers must first exhaust existing fuel stocks purchased at higher prices.
Conclusion
While the decline in global crude oil prices has raised hopes of cheaper petrol in Nigeria, experts insist that crude oil is only one part of the pricing equation. As Nigerians continue to grapple with high transport and living costs, many are urging marketers and regulators to ensure any future reductions in international oil prices are quickly reflected at filling stations.
