Russia and Ukraine Exchange Over 550 Fallen Soldiers in Rare Humanitarian Move

Russia and Ukraine have carried out another significant exchange involving the remains of soldiers killed in the ongoing war, according to a senior Russian lawmaker.
Shamsail Saraliyev, a member of Russia’s State Duma from the ruling United Russia party and part of a parliamentary group linked to the conflict, stated that Ukraine received the bodies of 522 of its soldiers, while Russia received 33 in return. Ukrainian authorities later confirmed that the exchange had taken place.

This latest development follows a similar operation last month, when officials in Kyiv reported receiving the remains of 528 Ukrainian soldiers. At the time, Russian media said Ukraine returned 41 fallen Russian servicemen.

That earlier exchange was conducted alongside a prisoner-of-war swap, with mediation from the United Arab Emirates. In June, both sides also completed another POW exchange, again facilitated through UAE diplomatic involvement.

Despite the intensity and continued escalation of the war since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, exchanges of fallen soldiers and prisoners of war remain among the few areas where limited cooperation still occurs between both sides.

These exchanges, though deeply somber, highlight ongoing backchannel diplomacy and humanitarian arrangements that occasionally bridge the divide between Moscow and Kyiv even amid prolonged conflict.
