Dangote Makes History! $17 Billion Mega Refinery Set to Transform Kenya and East Africa's Energy Future
In what could become one of the largest industrial investments in African history, Dangote Industries Limited has officially begun preliminary work on a $17 billion, 700,000-barrels-per-day oil refinery in Kenya.
The mega project, located on Lamu Island, has already moved beyond the planning stage, with site selection completed, soil testing underway, and engineering and design work officially in progress.
When completed, the refinery is expected to become East Africa's largest petroleum refinery, supplying refined fuel to Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and several neighboring countries while reducing the region's heavy dependence on imported petroleum products.
A Game-Changer for Africa
The refinery will replicate the success of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos, Nigeria, which has already transformed Nigeria's downstream oil sector.
With a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, the Kenyan refinery is expected to:
✅ Create thousands of jobs across East Africa.
✅ Strengthen regional energy security.
✅ Reduce fuel import dependence.
✅ Save billions in foreign exchange.
✅ Boost trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Dangote's Bigger Vision
This is only one part of Dangote's ambitious expansion strategy.
The company also plans to:
- Expand its Lagos refinery from 700,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels daily by 2028.
- Increase its combined refining capacity in Nigeria and Kenya to 2.1 million barrels per day.
- Invest an additional $46 billion in refining, cement, and fertilizer projects between 2026 and 2028.
If achieved, Dangote Industries will become one of the world's largest integrated industrial groups.
Why This Matters
For decades, Africa has exported crude oil while importing expensive refined fuel due to limited refining capacity.
This massive investment could help reverse that trend by producing more fuel within Africa, improving supply, reducing import costs, and supporting economic growth across the continent.
The project also reinforces Dangote's position as one of Africa's most influential industrialists, with investments that continue to reshape the continent's energy landscape.
