Dangote Refinery Surpasses US as Europe’s Biggest Jet Fuel Supplier, Exports ₦757 Billion Worth in June

Description: Dangote Refinery exported 466,000 metric tonnes of jet fuel worth ₦757 billion to Europe in June 2026, surpassing the United States and cementing Nigeria's position as a leading global fuel exporter.
Dangote Refinery Achieves Another Historic Milestone

Nigeria's Dangote Petroleum Refinery has recorded another landmark achievement by exporting approximately 466,000 metric tonnes of jet fuel to Europe in June 2026, overtaking the United States to become one of the continent's largest suppliers of aviation fuel during the month.

The shipment, estimated at 582.5 million litres, is valued at about ₦757 billion, highlighting the refinery's growing influence in the global energy market and reinforcing Nigeria's emergence as a major exporter of refined petroleum products.

Nigeria Overtakes the United States in European Jet Fuel Exports

According to a market report by S&P Global Commodity Insights, Nigeria's jet fuel exports to Europe doubled from 232,000 metric tonnes in May to 466,000 metric tonnes in June.

During the same period, exports from the United States dropped significantly:

- April: 818,000 metric tonnes
- May: 560,000 metric tonnes
- June: 399,000 metric tonnes

This remarkable shift placed the Dangote Refinery ahead of U.S. suppliers, making Nigeria one of Europe's leading jet fuel sources in June.

Exports Worth Over ₦757 Billion

The June shipment equals roughly 582.5 million litres of aviation fuel.

Using an estimated domestic price of ₦1,300 per litre, the total value of the exported cargo stands at approximately ₦757.25 billion, making it one of the refinery's biggest export achievements since commencing aviation fuel production.

Why Europe Is Buying More Nigerian Jet Fuel

Industry analysts say several factors contributed to the surge in Nigerian exports.

A sharp fall in global jet fuel prices after tensions in the Middle East eased created an oversupplied European market. At the same time, Dangote Refinery increased production while U.S. refiners and Middle Eastern suppliers also boosted shipments.

One market trader explained:

«"Jet fuel is currently oversupplied because local refinery production remains high. The United States and Dangote both shipped large volumes, while cargoes are also returning through the Suez Canal."»

Jet Fuel Prices Decline

Data from Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, showed that European jet fuel prices fell sharply.

The Northwest Europe Jet CIF cargo assessment dropped from a record $1,694.25 per metric tonne in March to $981.75 per metric tonne by the end of June.

Likewise, August contracts declined to $968.25 per metric tonne, reflecting expectations of a well-supplied summer market and softer aviation demand.

More Competition Expected

Europe could receive even greater volumes of jet fuel in the coming months.

Exports from Saudi Arabia increased dramatically from just 7,000 metric tonnes in May to over 106,000 metric tonnes in June, while shipments from India climbed from 129,000 metric tonnes to 197,000 metric tonnes.

Although exports from the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait slowed during June, analysts believe the East-West shipping route remains profitable, encouraging additional cargoes toward Europe.

Dangote Refinery Continues to Transform Nigeria's Economy

The latest achievement adds to Dangote Refinery's growing list of milestones.

According to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), the refinery exported an estimated 1.66 billion litres of refined petroleum products in April 2026, including:

- 513 million litres of petrol
- 534 million litres of diesel
- 615 million litres of aviation fuel

These exports were recorded during heightened geopolitical tensions that disrupted global fuel supply routes.

Nigeria Becomes a Major Petroleum Export Hub

The Dangote Refinery remains Nigeria's only large-scale refinery producing enough refined petroleum products to satisfy domestic demand while exporting significant volumes internationally.

Nigeria has now become a net exporter of petrol and aviation fuel, marking a historic turnaround after decades of relying heavily on imported refined petroleum products.

Industry experts believe jet fuel exports could continue rising if global supply disruptions persist and European demand remains strong.

What This Means for Nigeria

Dangote Refinery's growing export success represents more than a business achievement—it signals a major transformation of Nigeria's energy sector.

Higher exports could generate billions of naira in foreign exchange earnings, strengthen the country's trade balance, create jobs, and position Nigeria as one of Africa's leading refining and energy export hubs.

As production continues to expand, the refinery is expected to play an even greater role in reshaping global petroleum trade while boosting Nigeria's economic growth.
