Minister of Works, David Umahi, has finally spoken publicly on the death of Miss Mary Habila, the nurse who died at a government guest house in Ebonyi State, insisting that he suspects no foul play while calling for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of her death.

The tragic death of Mary Habila has continued to generate nationwide attention, with many Nigerians demanding answers amid widespread speculation on social media. The incident, which occurred at a guest house linked to the Ministry of Works, has prompted an ongoing police investigation and renewed calls for transparency.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, Umahi described the late nurse as "like a daughter" and revealed details about her health history, her final conversation before death, and efforts being made to uncover what truly happened.

Mary Habila Was Like Family to Me — Umahi

According to the minister, Habila had worked closely with him for about three years and was a trusted member of his team.

He clarified that she was a nurse employed by the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ebonyi State, and not a physiotherapist as previously reported.

«"She was like a daughter to me. She stayed with me for three years. Her family and my family are like one family," Umahi said.»

The minister added that her death has been deeply painful for him and those who knew her personally.

Umahi Reveals Medical History and ₦2.2 Million Hospital Bill

Umahi disclosed that Habila had a history of medical challenges and had been receiving treatment at a Turkish Hospital.

According to him, her most recent medical treatment took place on April 5, with a bill of approximately ₦2.2 million, which he personally paid.

He stated that the medical records remain available and could assist investigators in understanding her health condition before her death.

The Final Phone Call Before Her Death

One of the most startling revelations from Umahi's briefing was the account of Habila's final conversation with her boyfriend.

According to the minister, she reportedly called her boyfriend shortly before her death and informed him that she was experiencing a nosebleed.

The boyfriend allegedly advised her to seek medical attention immediately, but she responded that the bleeding had stopped.

Umahi said the boyfriend later ended the call, believing continued conversation could worsen the situation. However, when he called back a few minutes later, she was no longer responding.

The minister further revealed that Habila had informed her boyfriend she intended to take a bath before communication suddenly ceased.

Body Found Inside Locked Room

Umahi stated that concern grew after repeated attempts to reach Habila failed.

When colleagues eventually forced open her locked room, they reportedly found her lifeless body inside.

According to him, the bathroom tap was still running, suggesting she may have been preparing to bathe before the incident occurred.

The minister emphasized that the room was locked from the inside and had to be broken open before her body was discovered.

"I Suspect No Foul Play"

Responding to allegations circulating online, Umahi maintained that there was currently no evidence pointing to criminal activity.

He noted that another female occupant was present in the accommodation and that the circumstances observed at the scene did not immediately indicate foul play.

«"I suspect no foul play because the room was locked and had to be broken before they discovered her body," he stated.»

However, he stressed that investigators should be allowed to complete their work and establish the facts.

Minister Demands Autopsy

Umahi appealed to the deceased's family to permit an autopsy, describing it as the most reliable way to determine the true cause of death.

He disclosed that he had instructed authorities not to release the body for burial until an autopsy is carried out.

The minister also revealed that he requested the Inspector-General of Police to transfer the case to Abuja to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.

According to him, investigators require the autopsy results to provide definitive answers and address growing public concerns.

Previous Nosebleed Incidents Allegedly Reported

Umahi further claimed that Habila had experienced similar nosebleeds in the past.

He alleged that during a previous trip to Lagos, she informed her boyfriend that she was bleeding from the nose, but chose not to disturb him because she did not want to create additional concerns.

The minister urged investigators to examine phone records between the deceased and her boyfriend, saying the conversations could provide important insights into her final hours.

Police Investigation Continues

While Umahi insists there is no evidence of foul play, police authorities have continued their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Habila's death.

Investigators are expected to review witness statements, medical records, phone logs, and forensic evidence as part of efforts to establish exactly what happened.

An autopsy remains one of the most critical steps in the investigation, although reports indicate the deceased's family has expressed reservations due to cultural beliefs.

Public Awaits Answers

The death of Mary Habila has become one of the most talked-about stories in Nigeria, sparking intense debate across social media and news platforms.

As police investigations continue, many Nigerians are hoping for a transparent process that will provide clear answers and bring closure to her family, friends, and the public.

Whether the final findings support the theory of a medical emergency or reveal other factors, the outcome of the investigation is expected to be closely watched across the country.
