Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier has renewed her defense of attending a pro-Palestinian rally held one day after Hamas' October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, saying that international law should remain the guiding principle in evaluating the conflict.

Speaking during a wide-ranging interview on Friday with progressive Jewish author Peter Beinart, Avila Chevalier addressed criticism surroundibpng her appearance at the rally, which drew scrutiny due to its timing and reports that some participants used slogans interpreted as supporting Palestinian "resistance."

"I think the targeting of civilians is wrong in any context, including on October 7," Avila Chevalier said when asked about the controversial slogans.

The Democratic candidate stressed that her position is rooted in international humanitarian law rather than support for violence.

«"I think what matters is international law, and what international law condemns and protects," she said. "It condemns the targeting of civilians, and it also protects the right to resist."»
