EU and UK Hit Russia With Fresh Sanctions Over Cyber Attacks Targeting Europe’s Critical Infrastructure
The European Union and the United Kingdom have launched a new wave of coordinated sanctions against Russia, accusing Moscow of orchestrating cyber attacks aimed at disrupting critical infrastructure and destabilizing Europe.

The move marks the first joint UK-EU cyber sanctions package since Brexit and comes as Western governments warn that Russia is intensifying its hybrid warfare campaign alongside the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Russia Accused of Escalating Cyber Warfare

European and British officials say the sanctions target individuals and organizations linked to Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) and GRU military intelligence agency, accusing them of conducting cyber operations against governments, businesses, and essential services across Europe.

The European Union sanctioned nine individuals and four entities, while the United Kingdom added 24 people and organizations to its sanctions list.

Those targeted face asset freezes, travel bans, and financial restrictions designed to weaken Russia's cyber capabilities.

British officials described the action as a response to Russia's "persistent and increasingly reckless attempts to sow chaos and division across Europe."

Poland's Power Grid Was a Major Target

Officials revealed that one of the latest cyber attacks targeted Poland's critical infrastructure, including its electricity network.

Although the attack failed, UK authorities warned it could have left up to 500,000 people without electricity during winter, highlighting the growing threat cyber warfare poses to civilian infrastructure.

Several European Nations Affected

According to the European Union, countries targeted by Russia's cyber campaign include:

- France
- Germany
- Poland
- Cyprus
- Netherlands
- Austria
- Slovakia
- Romania
- Finland

Authorities say the attacks focused on government ministries, energy systems, transportation networks, businesses, and public service providers with the goal of stealing sensitive information and disrupting essential services.

France Links Cyber Group to Paris 2024 Olympics

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said cyber operations targeted government agencies, companies, and service operators.

France also confirmed that one of the sanctioned groups claimed responsibility for destabilizing activities linked to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, raising fresh concerns about foreign interference in major international events.

Europe Increases Pressure on Moscow

Several EU member states are summoning Russian diplomats to formally protest the alleged cyber attacks, while the latest sanctions further increase pressure on Moscow over its actions in both cyberspace and Ukraine.

Western intelligence agencies have long accused the FSB's Centre 16 of using sophisticated malware to conduct global cyber espionage against governments and critical infrastructure.

As geopolitical tensions continue to rise, cybersecurity has become one of Europe's top national security priorities, with officials warning that coordinated cyber attacks remain a serious threat to regional stability.
