FG Launches Nationwide Vocational Training Programme for 18,000 Artisans and Unemployed Youths

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a nationwide vocational training programme aimed at empowering over 18,000 artisans and unemployed youths with practical skills, entrepreneurship training, and trade-specific starter packs.

The initiative, coordinated by the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA) under the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, is designed to promote self-employment, reduce poverty, and support economic growth across the country.

FG Begins Skills Training Across Nigeria

The training officially commenced at 229 accredited training centres located across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to the Federal Government, the programme aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on moving vulnerable Nigerians from dependency to economic self-reliance through skills development and entrepreneurship.

The programme targets individuals who already possess basic vocational knowledge but require additional technical training to improve their productivity and income-generating capacity.

Participants will receive practical training in 14 high-demand vocational trades, including:

The goal is to equip beneficiaries with the knowledge required to successfully establish and manage profitable businesses.

Starter Packs for Successful Participants

One of the major highlights of the programme is the distribution of trade-specific starter packs to successful participants upon completion of the training.

The Federal Government explained that these tools are intended to help beneficiaries begin their businesses immediately after graduation.

To ensure accountability, all distributed equipment will be digitally tracked, and beneficiaries have been warned against selling the starter packs.

According to NSIPA, beneficiaries were selected through a transparent and inclusive process involving:

State governments

Traditional rulers

Religious leaders

Community Development Associations

Youth and women groups

Persons with disabilities

Other community stakeholders

Priority was given to unemployed youths, women, vulnerable Nigerians, and economically disadvantaged individuals with the potential to build sustainable livelihoods.

Government Explains the Initiative

Speaking during the launch in Abuja, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, said the initiative aims to move thousands of Nigerians from vulnerability to self-sufficiency through practical skills acquisition.

The government also revealed that thousands of vocational starter packs had remained unused in warehouses for years due to administrative delays. Instead of allowing the equipment to deteriorate, it approved their refurbishment and distribution to qualified trainees after completing the programme.
