GOP Lawmaker Introduces Bill to Limit DAR Membership to Biological Women, Sparking National Debate

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Ben Cline (R-Va.) has introduced new legislation that would require the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) to limit membership to biological women, reigniting a nationwide debate over gender identity, women's organizations, and congressional oversight.

The proposal comes after the congressionally chartered organization reportedly rejected a motion from some local members seeking to restrict membership to biological males who identify as transgender.

Founded in 1890, the Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Membership is open to women who can document direct descent from individuals who supported the American cause during the Revolutionary War.

According to Rep. Cline, the legislation is intended to preserve the organization's original mission and founding purpose.

«"The organization has now abandoned the very principles on which it was founded. Rather than honoring and preserving a lineage-based organization for women, it has embraced radical gender ideology at the expense of the women it was created to serve," Cline said.»

Supporters of the bill argue that organizations established specifically for women should maintain biological sex-based membership standards. Others contend that transgender women should be eligible for membership and that inclusive policies better reflect modern understandings of gender identity.

If enacted, the legislation would amend the DAR's congressional charter to specify that membership is limited to biological women. The proposal is expected to spark significant debate in Congress as lawmakers continue to grapple with issues surrounding sex, gender identity, and the role of congressionally chartered organizations.

The Daughters of the American Revolution has not announced any change to its current membership policy in response to the proposed legislation.
