Iran Launches Missiles at US Bases in Bahrain and Kuwait as Middle East Tensions Explode, Oil Prices Surge
A dramatic escalation in Middle East tensions unfolded on Wednesday after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it had launched coordinated missile and drone strikes targeting U.S. military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, in retaliation for fresh American military attacks on Iranian assets.
The latest exchange has intensified fears of a broader regional conflict, rattled global energy markets, and renewed concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most vital oil shipping routes.
According to Reuters, the IRGC said the operation targeted key U.S. military installations, including Bahrain's Fifth Naval District at Bandar Salman and Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait.
Iran also claimed its forces successfully shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone during the operation. However, the claim has not been independently verified.
Air Raid Sirens Sound Across Bahrain and Kuwait
Residents in both Bahrain and Kuwait were alerted as air raid sirens echoed across the countries during the attacks.
Kuwait's military confirmed that its air defence systems were actively intercepting what it described as "hostile missile and drone attacks."
Authorities in Bahrain also activated their air defence networks in response to the incoming threats, highlighting the seriousness of the escalating confrontation.
US Strikes Trigger Iranian Retaliation
The Iranian assault came only hours after the United States launched a fresh wave of military strikes against Iranian targets and revoked a licence that had allowed Tehran to continue limited oil exports.
Washington said the operation was carried out in response to recent attacks on three commercial oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz, accusing Iran of threatening international maritime security.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that its forces struck more than 60 vessels belonging to the Revolutionary Guards during the operation.
In a statement, CENTCOM said:
> "The unwarranted aggression by Iranian forces is a clear and dangerous violation of the ceasefire and undermines freedom of navigation."
Oil Prices Jump as Markets React
The renewed military confrontation immediately shook global energy markets.
According to Oilprice.com, Brent crude futures climbed by 2.52%, rising $1.73 to $70.28 per barrel as investors reacted to growing geopolitical risks in the Middle East.
Analysts warn that any disruption to the Strait of Hormuz—through which nearly 20% of the world's oil supply passes daily—could trigger even sharper increases in global oil prices.
Fragile Ceasefire Near Collapse
The latest military exchange threatens to derail the fragile ceasefire that had temporarily paused weeks of fighting between Iran and the United States.
The truce was designed to create a 60-day window for indirect diplomatic negotiations, but talks held in Qatar last week ended without any major breakthrough.
Iran has insisted it retains the right to regulate activity within the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States maintains that freedom of navigation must be protected.
Iran Rules Out Talks Under Military Pressure
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi warned that negotiations toward a permanent agreement would remain impossible while military pressure continues.
According to Reuters, Araqchi stated that talks "will not commence if threats continue," casting fresh doubt over prospects for a diplomatic solution.
Middle East Crisis Raises Global Security Fears
The latest escalation has heightened fears of a wider conflict involving U.S. allies across the Gulf region.
With military operations expanding, commercial shipping under threat, and oil prices already climbing, analysts warn that continued hostilities could have significant consequences for global energy supplies, financial markets, and regional stability.
As both Washington and Tehran exchange military strikes, the international community is closely monitoring developments amid growing concerns that the crisis could spiral into a much larger confrontation.
