Mbappé Fires Back

Responding publicly, Mbappé accused the senator of damaging Paraguay's international reputation.

«"You are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has shown passion and honor throughout this competition.»

«Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the historic effort your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country.»

«I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world."»

What Triggered the Controversy?

The controversy followed France's narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay on Saturday in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

Mbappé scored the game's only goal from the penalty spot in the 70th minute, helping France secure a place in the quarterfinals after a tense and physical encounter.

Reflecting on the match, the Real Madrid forward praised his team's resilience.

«"We knew what kind of match we were going to have. We can also get our hands dirty; we know how to do it. We know how to play ugly football. They probably thought we would show up in tuxedos, but we were ready."»

Following the match, Amarilla allegedly called Mbappé "stupid" on social media, criticized him for reportedly refusing to shake hands with Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill, and even suggested Gill "should have given him the middle finger."

Paraguayan Leaders Distance Themselves

The senator's comments have drawn criticism from several prominent Paraguayan officials.

Paraguay Vice President condemned the remarks, stressing that football should unite people rather than divide them.

«"Football is an expression of brotherhood. It should unite countries and people. Within the passions and emotions of the game, there is no room for any form of discrimination."»

Paraguayan congresswoman also expressed solidarity with Mbappé and France.

«"On the field, we are adversaries, but off it, we are united by far more: respect, dignity, and the pursuit of equality among all people. As a member of the Paraguayan Congress, my solidarity and my apologies to the French people."»
