Macron to Visit Nigeria This Fall as France and Nigeria Deepen Strategic Partnership

French President Emmanuel Macron will undertake an official State visit to Nigeria this fall, marking a major milestone in the growing diplomatic and economic relationship between France and Nigeria.

The announcement was made by France's Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Marc Fonbaustier, during France's National Day celebration in Abuja. The visit comes two years after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid a State visit to Paris, underscoring the commitment of both nations to strengthening their strategic partnership.

According to Ambassador Fonbaustier, Presidents Macron and Tinubu will review the progress made under their existing cooperation roadmap and outline new areas of collaboration that will shape France–Nigeria relations for years to come.

The French envoy emphasized that the partnership between both countries is built on mutual respect, equality, and shared interests, describing Nigeria and France as partners working together to promote economic growth, job creation, environmental sustainability, and regional stability.

In recent years, commercial ties between both countries have continued to expand through partnerships involving Carrefour and HyperCity, Accor and Shoreline, and Canal+'s acquisition of MultiChoice, reflecting increasing French investment in Nigeria.

Beyond trade, France continues to support Nigeria through agricultural initiatives led by the French Development Agency (AFD), aimed at strengthening food security, improving agricultural value chains, and expanding market access for farmers, particularly in Northern Nigeria and across the ECOWAS region.

Security cooperation is also expected to feature prominently during Macron's visit. Both nations remain committed to combating terrorism and enhancing regional security through joint efforts that strengthen the capabilities of countries facing extremist threats across West Africa.

The ambassador reaffirmed France's support for democracy, the rule of law, freedom of expression, gender equality, and youth empowerment, noting that the French Embassy continues to invest in programmes that support women, young people, and persons with disabilities across Nigeria.

Fonbaustier also revealed that President Macron's personal connection with Nigeria dates back more than two decades, when he spent six months in the country as a student. According to the ambassador, Macron has often credited that experience with shaping his vision for Africa and influencing France's modern African diplomacy.

The upcoming State visit is expected to further strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure, security, agriculture, education, innovation, and climate action, while reinforcing the long-standing friendship between both nations.

As global geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, Macron's visit highlights the growing importance of the France–Nigeria partnership in promoting peace, economic development, and regional cooperation across Africa.
