Nigeria Introduces Admission Quotas for Engineering Courses as NUC and JAMB Approve Major Education Reform
Description: The NUC and JAMB have approved engineering admission quotas in Nigerian universities following COREN's proposal. The reform aims to improve engineering education, practical training, graduate quality, and global competitiveness.
Abuja, Nigeria — In a landmark move aimed at improving the quality of engineering education, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) have approved the enforcement of admission quotas for engineering and technology programmes in Nigerian universities.
The development, announced by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), is expected to transform engineering education by ensuring that universities admit only the number of students their facilities, laboratories, workshops, equipment and academic workforce can adequately support.
Speaking during a media briefing ahead of COREN's 34th Engineering Assembly in Abuja on Tuesday, COREN President Prof. Sadiq Abubakar described the decision as a historic breakthrough that would raise the standard of engineering graduates across Nigeria.
«"We have finally secured the approval and endorsement of both the National Universities Commission and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to enforce admission quotas in all engineering and technology programmes run by Nigerian universities," Abubakar said.»
Engineering Admissions Now to Follow Professional Standards
According to Abubakar, the new policy places engineering alongside highly regulated professional disciplines such as medicine, law and pharmacy, where student admissions are carefully controlled to maintain educational quality.
He explained that unrestricted admissions over the years had overstretched university infrastructure, weakened practical training and reduced the overall quality of engineering education.
Under the new system, institutions will only admit students based on the capacity of their classrooms, laboratories, workshops, equipment and qualified academic staff, ensuring graduates receive the practical skills required for the profession.
Stronger Practical Training for Nigerian Engineers
COREN believes the reform will produce engineering graduates with stronger technical competence and hands-on experience, enabling them to compete successfully in both local and international labour markets.
Abubakar described the approval as the culmination of decades of advocacy by Nigeria's engineering profession.
He added that the reform would significantly strengthen Nigeria's engineering workforce and improve the country's reputation for producing globally competitive professionals.
«"This is going to be a game changer for our country and for the workforce Nigeria is likely going to export globally. Engineering is becoming increasingly global, and our graduates must possess the practical competence required to compete internationally," he said.»
Similar Admission Controls Planned for Polytechnics
The COREN president also disclosed that the council is collaborating with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to introduce similar admission quota regulations for engineering programmes offered in Nigerian polytechnics.
The move is intended to improve the quality of technical education across both universities and polytechnics nationwide.
COREN Reintroduces Engineering Residency Programme
As part of broader reforms, COREN has reintroduced the indexing and oath-taking of engineering graduates, alongside a mandatory one-year Engineering Residency Programme for university degree and Higher National Diploma (HND) holders before they proceed for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The residency programme is designed to provide structured industrial exposure, helping graduates gain practical workplace experience before beginning their professional careers.
239 Engineering Failure Investigators Certified
To improve public safety and accountability, COREN announced that it has trained and certified 239 engineering infrastructure failure and forensic investigators.
These specialists will investigate engineering-related failures, including:
- Building collapses
- Bridge failures
- Industrial accidents
- Other infrastructure failures
The council also confirmed that 839 engineering programme evaluators from academia and industry have been trained to strengthen accreditation and quality assurance across Nigerian universities and polytechnics.
COREN Strengthens Engineering Regulation Nationwide
Abubakar revealed that COREN has intensified nationwide compliance inspections, expanded its regional offices, digitised its registration processes and reactivated its disciplinary tribunal to strengthen engineering regulation across the country.
He warned that many engineering disasters result from non-compliance with professional standards and stressed that forensic investigations would scientifically determine the causes of infrastructure failures, identify responsible parties and recommend preventive measures.
34th Engineering Assembly to Focus on Public Safety
This year's 34th Engineering Assembly will be held under the theme:
"Advancing Public Safety in Nigeria Through Strategic Engineering Regulation, Enforcement and Tiered Sanctioning Regime."
The assembly will focus on strengthening engineering governance, improving professional standards and reducing infrastructure failures across Nigeria.
Why This Matters
The introduction of engineering admission quotas represents one of the most significant reforms in Nigeria's higher education sector in recent years. By aligning student admissions with institutional capacity, the policy is expected to improve practical training, raise the quality of engineering graduates, enhance public safety and position Nigerian engineers to compete more effectively in the global workforce.
