Nigerian Youths Will Decide the 2027 Elections — House of Representatives Sends Strong Message
As political activities ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum, the House of Representatives has called on young Nigerians to take charge of the country's future by actively participating in the electoral process.
The lawmakers stressed that the strength of Nigeria's democracy and the credibility of the 2027 elections will largely depend on the choices, participation, and civic responsibility of the nation's youth, who make up the country's largest voting population.
The call was made on Thursday during the 2026 National Assembly Open Week Youth Town Hall held at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja. The event brought together lawmakers, senior government officials, development partners, civil society organisations, youth leaders, and students to discuss youth inclusion, democratic accountability, and nation-building.

Youths Hold the Future of Nigeria's Democracy
Speaking on behalf of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, House Majority Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere said the 10th House has deliberately placed youth empowerment and inclusion at the centre of its legislative agenda.
He explained that the Youth Town Hall has evolved into more than an annual gathering, becoming a platform where young Nigerians directly influence national policies and legislative reforms.
According to him, recommendations from previous editions have already shaped constitutional amendment proposals and other key national policies currently before the National Assembly.
"The quality of our elections and the future of our democracy will, to a large extent, be determined by the choices, conduct and active involvement of young Nigerians," he said.
Major Youth-Focused Bills Before the National Assembly
The House highlighted several legislative initiatives designed to empower young Nigerians, including:
- National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Reform Bill.

The lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring young people become active partners in governance rather than passive recipients of government policies.
Federal Government Expands Youth Opportunities
Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande commended the National Assembly for creating a platform that allows young Nigerians to engage directly with lawmakers.
He said the Federal Government is implementing programmes to increase youth participation in governance while expanding access to entrepreneurship support, vocational training, digital skills, affordable financing, and green economy opportunities.
Among the initiatives are the Nigerian Youth Academy, youth enterprise support programmes, digital skills projects, and the proposed Youth Green Fund.
NASENI Offers Up to ₦250 Million for Innovators
Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NASENI, Khalil Halilu, encouraged Nigerian youths to embrace innovation, technology, and artificial intelligence to drive economic transformation.
He disclosed that NASENI's Innovate Nigeria Programme provides grants of up to ₦250 million to support innovators, inventors, startups, and technology-driven businesses capable of solving national challenges.
He urged young people to continuously develop their skills and seize emerging opportunities in the global digital economy.
Why This Matters
With millions of first-time and young voters expected to participate in the 2027 elections, political analysts believe youth participation could significantly influence Nigeria's next leadership and democratic direction.
Whether through voting, contesting elections, entrepreneurship, policy engagement, or innovation, young Nigerians have an unprecedented opportunity to shape the nation's future.
