Northern Governors Unveil Security Trust Fund to Fight Rising Insecurity

The 19 governors of Northern Nigeria have taken a major step toward addressing the region's growing security challenges by officially launching the Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund (NNSTF).

Speaking during the inauguration of the Board of Trustees of the Trust Fund in Kaduna on Wednesday, the Chairman of the Northern States Governors' Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, described the initiative as a landmark effort to restore peace, improve security coordination, and protect lives across the North.

According to a statement issued by the Director-General of Press Affairs, Gombe Government House, Ismaila Misilli, the governor said the region could no longer afford to ignore the devastating impact of insecurity.

Northern Nigeria Faces Growing Security Threats

Governor Yahaya noted that banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, drug abuse, and other violent crimes continue to threaten communities, disrupt farming activities, destroy businesses, and weaken economic growth across Northern Nigeria.

«"Today marks a significant milestone in our collective effort to confront one of the most serious challenges facing Northern Nigeria: insecurity," he said.»

He stressed that insecurity has affected virtually every northern state, slowing development and undermining peaceful coexistence.

Why the Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund Was Created

The governor explained that the Trust Fund was established after northern governors agreed during previous meetings in Kaduna and Abuja that stronger regional collaboration was urgently needed.

While acknowledging that security remains the constitutional responsibility of the Federal Government, Yahaya said the northern states are determined to complement federal efforts through coordinated action.

The Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund is expected to:

- Mobilize financial resources for security initiatives.
- Strengthen intelligence gathering and information sharing.
- Improve coordination among security agencies.
- Support rapid response to security threats.
- Protect lives, property, and critical infrastructure.

Board of Trustees Inaugurated

Governor Yahaya said the inauguration of the Board of Trustees marks the beginning of the implementation phase of the initiative.

According to him, board members were carefully selected from the 19 northern states based on integrity, patriotism, competence, and professional experience.

He urged them to focus on delivering measurable results rather than creating another bureaucratic institution.

«"The Trust Fund must not become another platform that only holds meetings. It must remain focused on practical solutions, resource mobilization, and effective collaboration with security agencies."»

Northern States to Contribute ₦1 Billion Monthly

One of the biggest highlights of the initiative is the financial commitment already agreed upon by the governors.

Governor Yahaya revealed that every northern state, together with its local governments, is expected to contribute ₦1 billion every month for 12 months to finance the Security Trust Fund.

He praised states that have already begun honoring their commitments while urging others to do the same without delay.

«"The task before us is too urgent to be left to only a few states. Every state must fulfill its pledge promptly."»

Insecurity Threatens Northern Economy

The Gombe governor warned that insecurity continues to damage agriculture, discourage investors, displace thousands of families, and worsen poverty across the region.

He emphasized that restoring security requires not only military operations but also sustainable investments in human development.

According to him, lasting peace depends on addressing the root causes of violence, including:

- Poverty
- Youth unemployment
- Illiteracy
- Drug abuse
- Out-of-school children
- Limited economic opportunities

He also called for increased investment in education, agriculture, youth empowerment, skills acquisition, and livestock development.

Support for Tinubu's Security Reforms

Governor Yahaya commended President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for ongoing efforts to strengthen national security.

He also welcomed current discussions on state policing, describing them as an important step toward improving security nationwide.

However, he clarified that the newly established Security Trust Fund is designed to complement—not replace—the work of federal security agencies.

Its objective, he said, is to strengthen collaboration, improve intelligence sharing, and enhance the effectiveness of existing security structures.

Call for Collective Responsibility

Governor Yahaya appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, civil society organizations, development partners, and the private sector to support the initiative.

He stressed that security is everyone's responsibility and urged all stakeholders to put aside political and personal differences for the collective good of Northern Nigeria.

«"If we are to win this battle, we must match our words with action, our concerns with resources, and our resolutions with proper implementation."»

Conclusion

The launch of the Northern Nigeria Security Trust Fund represents one of the most ambitious regional security initiatives in recent years. With coordinated funding, intelligence sharing, and collaboration among all 19 northern states, the governors hope the initiative will significantly reduce banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and other criminal activities while creating a safer environment for economic growth and sustainable development.
