Peter Obi Highlights Nigeria's Future at ECFR Berlin Roundtable, Calls for Good Governance and Economic Transformation
Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his belief that Nigeria can achieve lasting prosperity through competent leadership, strong institutions, and productive economic policies.
Obi made the remarks during a high-level roundtable discussion titled "Nigeria in 2027 and Beyond," hosted by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) in Berlin, Germany.

The event brought together policymakers, diplomats, development experts, business leaders, representatives of international organisations, and members of the global media to examine Nigeria's democratic future, economic opportunities, and its role in an increasingly interconnected world.
A major focus of the discussions was how Nigeria can strengthen partnerships with the international community to support Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), which Obi described as the backbone of every productive economy. He noted that empowering SMEs through investment, innovation, and improved access to opportunities is essential for job creation, wealth generation, and sustainable national development.

Participants also exchanged ideas on strengthening democratic institutions, improving governance, expanding trade and investment, promoting regional stability, and creating an enabling environment that inspires confidence among citizens, investors, and Nigeria's international partners.

Obi expressed encouragement at the strong interest shown by participants in Nigeria's future, noting the presence of senior representatives from the German Federal Government, development agencies, business associations, policy institutes, foundations, international organisations, and respected international media. According to him, their participation reflects Nigeria's strategic importance and the shared commitment to seeing the country realise its enormous potential.

During his remarks, Obi reiterated that Nigeria possesses abundant human and natural resources capable of transforming the nation into one of the world's leading economies. However, he stressed that this potential can only be unlocked through competent, accountable, and compassionate leadership that prioritises investment in education, healthcare, productive enterprise, the rule of law, and strong institutions over politics driven by consumption.

He further stated that Nigeria must deliberately transition from consumption to production, poverty to prosperity, and division to unity, adding that fiscal responsibility, transparent governance, and productive international partnerships remain critical to building an economy that benefits every Nigerian and restores the country's standing in the global community.

Obi thanked the European Council on Foreign Relations for organising the roundtable and appreciated all participants for what he described as a frank, constructive, and forward-looking exchange of ideas. He noted that such engagements are vital for strengthening international cooperation and building lasting partnerships that will benefit Nigeria, Africa, and the wider global community.

He concluded with his enduring message of hope:

"A New Nigeria Is Possible."
