South Africa Issues Tough Warning to Landlords
Landlords in KwaZulu-Natal could face arrest and prosecution if they rent properties to undocumented immigrants, as authorities intensify a nationwide crackdown on illegal immigration.
Premier Thami Ntuli warned that property owners must verify tenants' identity documents before offering accommodation, adding that landlords found harbouring undocumented foreigners could be arrested alongside their tenants.
The warning follows concerns from traditional leaders, who claim some rental properties have become hideouts for criminal suspects who are difficult for police to trace.
The development comes amid growing anti-foreigner tensions in South Africa and renewed calls for stricter immigration enforcement. It has also prompted Nigeria to evacuate citizens who voluntarily requested to return home, with hundreds already repatriated in multiple batches.
