Vietnam Police Arrest 85 in Massive $133 Million World Cup Betting Crackdown

Vietnamese authorities have arrested 85 suspects connected to two of the country's largest illegal football betting syndicates, with authorities estimating the networks handled more than $133 million (over ₦200 billion) in illicit wagers during the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The arrests form part of an intensified nationwide crackdown on illegal gambling as football fever sweeps across the country.

Police Uncover Multi-Million Dollar Betting Networks

According to police in Ho Chi Minh City, coordinated raids carried out in late June dismantled two "exceptionally large-scale" online betting operations that had been running with a sophisticated command structure and strict hierarchy.

Investigators revealed that the syndicates processed an estimated $133 million in illegal betting transactions since October 2025, making them among the biggest gambling operations uncovered in Vietnam in recent years.

Authorities described the organisations as highly organised criminal networks with multiple layers of agents responsible for recruiting and managing thousands of gamblers.

Betting Accounts Linked to Cambodia

Police said the alleged ringleaders admitted receiving master betting accounts from individuals based in Cambodia, where online gambling is more accessible.

The accounts were then divided into numerous smaller agent and member accounts before being distributed to bettors across Vietnam through online platforms.

Investigators believe the cross-border structure allowed the syndicates to evade detection while expanding their gambling operations nationwide.

World Cup Sparks Surge in Illegal Gambling

Vietnam strictly prohibits online gambling, but underground betting typically surges during major sporting events, especially the FIFA World Cup.

Last week, Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security announced that officers had dismantled 73 illegal gambling operations nationwide during the first 20 days of the tournament.

The nationwide operation resulted in the arrest of 346 suspects involved in football betting and other gambling-related offences.

According to Colonel Bui Tuan Anh, the total value of transactions linked to the cases reached thousands of billions of Vietnamese dong, equivalent to hundreds of millions of US dollars.

2026 FIFA World Cup Continues

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, has attracted millions of viewers worldwide, but it has also triggered a sharp rise in illegal betting activities across several countries.

The tournament is scheduled to conclude with the final on July 19, while authorities across Asia continue monitoring gambling syndicates attempting to profit from football's biggest event.

Authorities Vow Continued Crackdown

Vietnamese law enforcement says investigations are still ongoing, with additional arrests expected as officials trace financial transactions and identify other members connected to the betting networks.

The government has reiterated its commitment to combating illegal gambling, warning that anyone found operating or participating in underground betting schemes will face severe legal consequences.
