Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has empowered 3,792 graduates of government-owned vocational skills training centres with working tools as part of efforts to reduce poverty, promote self-reliance and expand economic opportunities across the state.

The empowerment exercise, organised through the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), was held at the Blue Roof, Agidingbi, Ikeja, under the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI).
The programme is designed to help residents who have completed vocational training transition from learning skills to establishing sustainable businesses.

Nearly 40,000 Residents Empowered With Working Tools
Governor Sanwo-Olu also disclosed that almost 40,000 Lagos residents have been empowered with working tools during the period of his administration.
The initiative is aimed at helping trained residents establish businesses, strengthen existing enterprises and become financially independent.
For many vocational trainees, access to practical equipment can be a major challenge after completing their training. While acquiring a skill provides an important foundation, the absence of tools and start-up resources can prevent graduates from turning their knowledge into income-generating businesses.

In her welcome address, Dada explained that MESI was created to bridge the gap between vocational training and business establishment.
She said graduates of the state’s Skills Acquisition Centres require more than classroom or practical training to become economically independent.

The commissioner disclosed that 35,101 residents had graduated from the ministry’s Skills Acquisition Centres since the beginning of the Sanwo-Olu administration.
She added that 18,990 beneficiaries had received start-up equipment through MESI.

Over 1,100 Residents Trained in Digital Skills
Beyond traditional vocational training, the Lagos State Government has also expanded its empowerment programmes to include digital skills.
According to the commissioner, more than 1,100 residents have acquired digital skills through government-supported programmes.

While skills acquisition and entrepreneurship programmes are designed to provide longer-term economic opportunities, food support can provide immediate assistance to families facing financial difficulties.

Over 5,500 Widows Receive Business Support
The Lagos State Government has also targeted widows through financial empowerment initiatives.
According to the commissioner, more than 5,500 widows have received financial grants aimed at strengthening their businesses.
Small grants can provide beneficiaries with additional working capital to purchase supplies, expand their businesses or address some of the financial challenges associated with running small enterprises.
For widows who depend on small businesses to support their families, such interventions can play an important role in improving household stability.
The programme therefore forms part of the state government’s broader social intervention strategy aimed at supporting vulnerable groups.
Sanwo-Olu Links Empowerment to THEMES+ Agenda
