ADAC Ecotest 2024: Stellantis EVs Dominate as Prius Is the Only Top Hybrid
The ADAC Ecotest 2024 results are in, and as expected, electric vehicles (EVs) have taken the lead—highlighting how eco-friendly innovation is driving the future of the auto industry. Out of the 84 vehicles tested, the top ten were almost entirely EVs, with just one exception: the plug-in hybrid Toyota Prius.
Stellantis Takes the Crown
Stellantis swept the top three positions with:
1. Peugeot e-208 (156 hp) – 16.0 kWh/100 km, 80g CO₂/km
2. Peugeot e-308 – 16.5 kWh/100 km, 82g CO₂/km
3. Opel Corsa Electric
These models stood out not just for their efficiency but also for their minimal environmental impact. Even after factoring in the indirect CO₂ emissions from electricity generation, their scores were impressive.
The Tesla Model 3—the largest vehicle in the top five—ranked fourth, with a consumption of 17.2 kWh/100 km and 86g CO₂/km.
How ADAC Calculates Eco Impact
ADAC uses a comprehensive well-to-wheel (WTW) analysis, which accounts for:
Direct emissions (from driving)
Indirect emissions (from fuel or electricity production)
Vehicles can score up to 60 points for low CO₂ emissions and 50 points for minimal harmful pollutants like CO, NOx, and particulates.
Surprise Wins for Non-EVs
Interestingly, non-EVs like the VW Golf 1.5 TSI and VW Passat 2.0 TDI achieved full marks (50/50) for low pollutant emissions, thanks to advanced exhaust purification systems. The VW Passat Variant 2.0 TDI was particularly praised for its low emissions and fuel economy (just 5 liters/100 km).
EV Sales Down in Germany
Despite the eco performance, Germany’s EV market saw a sharp decline in new registrations in 2024. Only 380,600 electric cars were registered, compared to 524,200 in 2023. The main reason? The removal of the government’s environmental bonus, which clearly affected consumer incentives.
