Nissan's Next-Gen e-POWER Hybrid Debuts in Qashqai with EV-Like Drive and 42% Engine Efficiency

Nissan is redefining hybrid technology with the third-generation e-POWER system, launching in the 2025 Qashqai. This upgraded series-hybrid setup offers the feel of an EV without the need to plug in, delivering 4.5L/100km fuel economy and over 1,200 km of range — all while cutting CO₂ emissions by 12%.
Unlike traditional hybrids, e-POWER relies solely on a 1.5L turbo petrol engine as a generator, sending electricity to a 151kW electric motor that drives the wheels. With zero mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels, drivers get smooth, instant EV-style torque and silent city driving.

While not a plug-in, this setup is reminiscent of China’s EREVs (Extended Range EVs) — minus the external charging port and with a smaller 2.1 kWh battery.
Thanks to an entirely reworked powertrain and a larger turbo, the new system is up to 5.6 decibels quieter and 16% more efficient in real-world use, per ADAC tests. Built in the UK, the 2025 Qashqai e-POWER hits European roads in September 2025, with launches in North America (Rogue) and Japan (Elgrand) to follow in 2026.
Nissan calls it a “bridge technology” — but critics argue it's a temporary fix when investment in EV charging would be the more sustainable path forward.
