Pixel 6a Battery Update Incoming: Google to Throttle Charging After 400 Cycles to Prevent Fire Risk

Earlier this year, Google pushed a Battery Performance Program update for the Pixel 4a, significantly reducing its battery capacity due to overheating and fire concerns. Now, the Pixel 6a is next in line for a similar safety measure.
According to multiple reports, some Pixel 6a units have caught fire while charging, prompting Google to take proactive action. The tech giant confirmed that it will release a mandatory software update for Pixel 6a devices that have surpassed 400 charging cycles.

This update, spotted in the Android 16 QPR1 beta, will lower the battery's voltage and reduce charging speed and capacity to avoid overheating. Google released an official statement, saying:

> “A subset of Pixel 6a phones will require a mandatory software update to reduce the risk of potential battery overheating. The update will enable battery management features that will reduce capacity and charging performance after the battery reaches 400 charge cycles. We’ll contact impacted customers next month, with all the information they need to address the issue.”
For context, in the Pixel 4a’s case, Google dropped the maximum battery voltage from 4.45V to 3.95V, reducing the battery’s effective capacity by over 50%. The Pixel 6a is expected to undergo a similar adjustment.

How to Check Your Pixel 6a Battery Health:
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. If you see a warning or alert, it may be time to visit a licensed service center and consider a battery replacement.

Also worth noting—Google is currently offering free battery replacements for Pixel 7a units experiencing swelling issues.

Stay safe and keep an eye on your device’s health!
