Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 Certified with Qi 2.1, But Wireless Charging Specs Raise Questions
The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 has just been certified by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), confirming support for the Qi 2.1 wireless charging standard. However, the certification details raise more questions than they answer.
According to the WPC listing, the Fold7 only supports Basic Power Profile (BPP) at 5W, which is highly unlikely. Its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold6, was certified for Extended Power Profile (EPP) at 15W, and it’s expected that the Fold7 will at least match that capability.
Qi 2.1 introduces several new charging profiles, notably:
MCPE (Magnetic Cover Power Enhancement): Enables MPP (Magnetic Power Profile) charging for non-magnetic devices via magnet-equipped cases.
MCPM (Magnetic Cover Power Magnet): Designed for phones with built-in magnets to enhance magnetic alignment and connection using “feedthrough” magnets in compatible cases.
Despite the Galaxy Z Fold7 supporting Qi 2.1, the WPC page doesn’t mention support for EPP or MPP, and the device is oddly listed under the model number SM-D637U—a departure from Samsung’s typical SM-Fxxxx naming convention.
With a "Coming Soon" placeholder image and incomplete spec details, the listing feels unfinished. Still, it's unlikely Samsung will fully embrace native magnetic charging with the Z Fold7. Instead, the brand may continue to support MCPE-based magnet cases, much like what we expect from the Galaxy S25 series.
