Xiaomi May Follow Apple with Year-Based HyperOS Naming: HyperOS 26 Could Replace HyperOS 3
In late May, reliable Apple insider Mark Gurman reported that Apple might shift to a year-based naming system for its operating systems. Instead of launching iOS 19, the company could release iOS 26, aligning with macOS 26, iPadOS 26, and more. This change would help streamline marketing and make it easier for users to identify the release year.
Interestingly, Xiaomi may adopt the same strategy for its upcoming Android 16-based HyperOS. Instead of continuing with HyperOS 3, the Chinese tech giant could launch HyperOS 26 later this year—likely in October or November. This would reflect the calendar year, making it easier for users to track software updates.
However, there’s a trade-off. Naming operating systems after the year would require Xiaomi to stick to a strict annual release schedule, avoiding any delays to prevent version mismatches.
As we approach the expected launch window, we’ll likely get official confirmation from Xiaomi. But if both Apple and Xiaomi implement year-based OS naming, it may become a new industry norm.
