Android Phones Could Soon Get 3D Face Recognition with Under-Display Cameras
3D facial recognition has long been a premium feature in smartphones, with Apple's Face ID remaining the gold standard. However, a new report from trusted tipster Digital Chat Station suggests that several Chinese smartphone brands are currently testing devices that combine under-display (UD) selfie cameras with 3D face recognition technology.
This could mark a major leap forward for Android biometrics, especially since very few devices in the ecosystem currently offer advanced 3D face scanning.
Android Still Playing Catch-Up
While iPhones have used secure 3D facial recognition for years, the feature is rare on Android devices. The only mainstream Android phone to feature it recently is the Honor Magic7 Pro. Meanwhile, under-display selfie cameras have popped up in models like the ZTE Nubia Z70S Ultra, but those lack secure face authentication.
No brand or model name was revealed in the report, but if successful, this innovation could finally bring Android up to speed in secure biometric authentication while also eliminating notches and punch-holes.
A World First?
If a device successfully launches with both 3D face scanning and an invisible under-display camera, it would be a first-of-its-kind in the industry. The move would also signal the next wave of full-screen, high-security smartphones.
Stay tuned as this story develops—the race to blend high security with sleek design is on, and the Android world might soon catch up to Apple’s Face ID lead.
