BMW Says No to Apple CarPlay Ultra, Sticks with iDrive for Future Models

Apple’s CarPlay Ultra may be gaining traction among several automakers, but not everyone is ready to jump on board. BMW has once again confirmed that it will not adopt Apple’s advanced infotainment system, instead focusing on the next generation of its in-house iDrive software.
CarPlay Ultra was officially launched in May 2025 after a long delay. The updated platform allows for deep integration with vehicle functions such as climate control, navigation, and digital displays. Aston Martin is currently piloting the rollout, while brands like Hyundai, Kia, Ford, Honda, Nissan, Genesis, Porsche, Jaguar, and Infiniti are already working closely with Apple to implement the new system in future models.

BMW, however, is choosing a different path. Alongside Mercedes, Polestar, Volvo, Renault, and GM, the German automaker is hesitant to hand over too much control of its vehicle experience to Apple. General Motors has already started removing support for standard CarPlay in some of its latest electric vehicles, signaling a broader push for software independence.

BMW used the opportunity to highlight its iDrive operating system, which will debut in the upcoming BMW iX3 and expand across the Neue Klasse lineup. While traditional Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will still be available, they will be confined to the central infotainment screen — without access to deeper vehicle controls.

As automakers continue to decide whether to embrace or resist Apple’s vision for the connected car, it’s clear that the battle for dashboard dominance is just beginning.
