Tesla Model 3+ Unveiled: Longest-Range RWD EV Yet with Over 800km on a Single Charge
Tesla is gearing up to launch a new version of its popular Model 3 in China, and it's all about maximizing range. Dubbed the Tesla Model 3+, this upcoming variant is engineered to become the longest-range EV in the brand’s entire lineup by smartly combining existing components in a new, efficient package.
According to documents filed with Chinese regulators, the Model 3+ will pair the single-motor, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) setup from the standard Model 3 with a more powerful Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) battery pack from LG—usually reserved for Tesla’s dual-motor AWD Long Range and Performance models. The result? A potential range of over 800 km on China’s CLTC test cycle.
Currently, the RWD Model 3 in China uses a 62.5 kWh LFP battery from CATL, offering 634 km of range with an energy consumption rate of just 11.2 kWh per 100 km. Meanwhile, the AWD Long Range version features a 78.4 kWh NMC battery and delivers 753 km but consumes more energy at 12.1 kWh/100 km. The upcoming Model 3+ bridges these two by giving the efficient single motor access to the top-tier battery—an ideal combination for distance-focused EV drivers.
Interestingly, Tesla already sells a Long Range RWD Model 3 in global markets using a 78.1 kWh NMC battery. It has a 235 kW (320 hp) motor and delivers 584 km of EPA range or 702 km WLTP, indicating what the China-specific Model 3+ might achieve or exceed.
The Model 3+ will sit perfectly between the base and AWD models in Tesla China's pricing structure. Reports suggest a launch price of RMB 270,000 (~€32,100), positioning it just above the base RWD (RMB 235,500) and below the Long Range AWD (RMB 285,500). For drivers who don’t need all-wheel drive but want maximum driving range, this will be a compelling and affordable option.
This isn’t Tesla’s first foray into long-range, single-motor EVs in China. A similar variant with 667 km of range was offered before being discontinued in early 2020. However, with advancements in battery tech and a refreshed Model 3 design, the Model 3+ is poised to set new benchmarks in the affordable long-range EV category.
As Tesla faces increased competition in the world’s largest EV market, the Model 3+ shows a strategic pivot—focusing on ultra-long range, a key concern for many electric car buyers. With this release, Tesla reinforces its position not just with innovation but with real-world usability: drive farther, charge less.
