Elon Musk Loses Trillionaire Status After SpaceX Stock Crash and Tesla Share Restrictions

Elon Musk No Longer a Trillionaire as Net Worth Falls Below $1 Trillion

Elon Musk has officially lost his trillionaire status just days after making history as the world's first trillionaire.
The billionaire entrepreneur crossed the historic $1 trillion net worth mark on June 12, following the successful public listing of SpaceX, which sent the company's valuation soaring. The rally pushed Musk's fortune to an estimated $1.1 trillion, making him the richest person ever recorded.

Just four days later, on June 16, SpaceX shares surged another 40%, lifting Musk's wealth to an all-time record of approximately $1.45 trillion.

SpaceX Stock Decline Erases Hundreds of Billions

The celebration was short-lived.

SpaceX shares have since fallen 31%, wiping out hundreds of billions of dollars in market value and significantly reducing Musk's personal fortune.

As of the close of trading on Tuesday, Musk's estimated net worth had dropped to $962 billion, ending his brief reign as the world's first trillionaire.

Tesla Stock Restrictions Add More Pressure

The decline in Musk's wealth wasn't caused by SpaceX alone.

Last Tuesday, Musk surrendered $7.1 billion worth of Tesla shares to cover the exercise cost of stock options awarded under his landmark 2018 CEO compensation package.

That compensation plan had been invalidated by a Delaware judge in 2024 before being reinstated by the Delaware Supreme Court in 2025.

Following the court ruling, Tesla and Musk reached a revised agreement in April. Under the new arrangement, the exercised options were converted into restricted Tesla shares.

The agreement states that Musk must remain with Tesla until January 2028 as CEO or continue serving as a senior executive responsible for product development or company operations. Failing to meet those conditions could result in the forfeiture of the restricted shares.

Is Elon Musk Still the World's Richest Person?

Despite losing nearly half a trillion dollars from his peak valuation, Elon Musk remains the richest person on Earth by a considerable margin.

His wealth continues to be driven by major stakes in SpaceX, Tesla, xAI, X (formerly Twitter), and several other ventures.

The dramatic rise and fall of Musk's fortune highlights how quickly billionaire wealth can fluctuate based on stock market performance and corporate restructuring.

Final Thoughts

Elon Musk's record-breaking journey to becoming the world's first trillionaire lasted only a few days, as falling SpaceX shares and new Tesla stock restrictions pushed his fortune back below the $1 trillion mark.

Even so, with an estimated net worth of $962 billion, Musk remains the world's wealthiest individual and one of the most influential figures in technology, space exploration, and artificial intelligence.
