Keir Starmer Set to Resign as Andy Burnham Emerges as Labour's Favorite
Starmer Faces Exit as Labour Revolt Grows, Burnham Poised to Take Over
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is reportedly preparing to announce his resignation on Monday following mounting pressure from Labour MPs who want Andy Burnham to take over as party leader and prime minister.
Speaking on Sunday, Business Secretary Peter Kyle acknowledged that Starmer was facing significant challenges within his party and was carefully considering his next steps. While refusing to confirm reports of an imminent resignation, Kyle said the prime minister was focused on doing what was best for the country during a period of political uncertainty.
For weeks, Starmer and his allies had insisted they would resist any leadership challenge. However, Burnham's recent victory in the Makerfield by-election has dramatically shifted the political landscape. The former Greater Manchester mayor secured a commanding win, boosting confidence among supporters who believe he now has backing from around half of Labour's MPs.
Reports suggest senior ministers have urged Starmer to decide on a departure timetable or risk being forced out. Meanwhile, former Health Secretary Wes Streeting is also considering a leadership bid, though many MPs are increasingly rallying behind Burnham as the likely successor.
If Starmer steps down, the UK will be on course for its seventh prime minister in just a decade. Despite leading Labour to a landslide election victory two years ago, his government has been weakened by policy U-turns, controversies, and declining public support.
With Reform UK continuing to lead national polls, many Labour MPs believe a leadership change is essential to prevent Nigel Farage from winning the next general election.
