Police Dismiss Claims Linking Sunday Igboho to Alleged Release of Kidnap Victims in Oyo
The Oyo State Police Command has denied reports circulating on social media that Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, was responsible for the release of kidnapped victims in Igboho community, Oorelope Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to the police, there is no official confirmation that the abducted family has been rescued, nor is there any evidence connecting Igboho to efforts that may have led to their freedom.
The clarification comes after viral videos and online reports claimed that a woman, her children, and a relative who were kidnapped during a late-night attack had been released shortly after Igboho issued a two-hour ultimatum demanding their freedom.
In the widely shared message, Igboho warned that he would take action if the captives were not released within the specified period. Soon after, unverified reports emerged online suggesting that the victims had regained their freedom, sparking celebrations among residents and supporters.
The kidnapping had earlier caused panic in the community after armed men reportedly abducted members of a family and demanded a ransom that was initially set at N300 million before allegedly being reduced to N150 million during negotiations.
The situation became more alarming amid reports that a pregnant woman and a ransom courier may have been killed, although details remain unclear.
While Igboho has strongly condemned the rising wave of kidnappings in the region, the police insist that reports of the victims’ release and his alleged involvement remain unverified. Authorities have urged the public to rely only on official updates as investigations continue.
As of the latest reports, uncertainty still surrounds the fate of the abducted family.
