Kenneth Okonkwo Fires Back at Peter Obi’s Defamation Letter, Gives Seven-Day Response

Former Labour Party spokesperson and Nollywood veteran Kenneth Okonkwo has formally responded to a defamation letter reportedly sent by former presidential candidate Peter Obi, describing the allegations against him as baseless and an attempt to silence his constitutional right to free expression.
In a detailed reply dated June 16, 2026, Okonkwo maintained that he did not defame Peter Obi during his appearance on Channels Television on June 8. According to him, the statements he made were based on information provided by a client, Obunike Ohaegbu, who allegedly sought legal assistance in recovering ₦10 million paid during the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) primary process.

Okonkwo stated that his client accused party officials and political leaders of misleading aspirants and collecting large sums of money under questionable circumstances. He argued that his comments on television merely reflected the grievances and allegations presented to him by his client.

The lawyer also criticized the publication of his personal phone number in the course of the dispute, claiming it exposed him to harassment, threats, and privacy violations. He suggested that legal action may be pursued over what he described as a deliberate breach of his personal data.

Throughout the response, Okonkwo defended his role as a lawyer, public affairs analyst, and politician, insisting that he has a duty to expose alleged wrongdoing whenever it comes to his attention. He further argued that his comments were made in good faith and based on information he considered credible at the time.

The development marks a new chapter in the growing public disagreement between the two former political allies, with both sides now presenting sharply contrasting versions of events surrounding the controversial NDC primaries.

As of the time of reporting, Peter Obi has not publicly responded to Okonkwo’s latest letter.
