Police Debunk Viral Katsina Video, Say Officer Was Interacting With Vigilantes, Not Bandits
Nigeria Police Clarify Viral Katsina Video Amid Social Media Controversy
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that a uniformed police officer was seen fraternising with armed bandits in Katsina State, describing the allegations as false, misleading, and deliberately designed to misinform the public.
The clarification follows the widespread circulation of a viral video showing a police officer interacting with armed men riding motorcycles in parts of Katsina State. Social media users had alleged that the officer was collaborating with bandits, sparking outrage and concerns about security operations in northern Nigeria.
However, in an official statement released on Wednesday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, stated that the individuals captured in the footage were not bandits but recognized members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters assisting security agencies in ongoing operations across Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of Katsina State.
Viral Video Misrepresented, Says Police
According to the police, the footage merely captured a routine interaction between a police officer and community security volunteers who were heading to a designated operational area as part of efforts to combat criminal activities and improve public safety.
"The Nigeria Police Force categorically disclaims the false and misleading narrative accompanying a viral video circulating on social media which alleges that a uniformed police officer was seen interacting with armed bandits in Katsina State," the statement read.
The Force emphasized that any attempt to portray the individuals in the video as bandits is entirely false and malicious.
Police Condemn Spread of Misinformation
The NPF strongly condemned what it described as a deliberate distortion of facts capable of creating public anxiety, weakening confidence in security institutions, and disrupting ongoing security operations against criminal elements.
Authorities warned that the spread of false information can have serious consequences, especially in regions facing security challenges.
"The claim is entirely false, malicious, and intended to mislead the public," the police reiterated.
Legal Action Threatened Against Fake News Peddlers
The police also issued a stern warning to individuals and groups responsible for creating and disseminating false narratives capable of threatening public peace and security.
The Force noted that those found guilty of spreading misinformation could face legal consequences under applicable laws.
Citizens were urged to verify information before sharing it online and rely only on official channels of the Nigeria Police Force and authorized government agencies for accurate security updates.
NPF Reaffirms Partnership With Vigilantes and Hunters
The statement further highlighted the critical role played by community-based security volunteers, including members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and registered hunters, in supporting law enforcement agencies across the country.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with legitimate local security stakeholders to strengthen intelligence gathering, protect communities, and combat criminal activities nationwide.
Growing Concern Over Fake Security Reports in Nigeria
The incident has once again highlighted the growing challenge of misinformation on social media, particularly regarding security matters. Analysts warn that false reports can fuel panic, damage public trust, and hinder the efforts of security agencies working to restore peace in affected communities.
As security challenges continue in parts of northern Nigeria, authorities are calling for greater responsibility among social media users and content creators when sharing sensitive information.
