Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has stirred nationwide debate after revealing his proposed approach to tackling insecurity if elected president in 2027.

Speaking during an interview on BlackBox with Rufai Oseni, Obi said he would be willing to engage in dialogue with bandits and other violent groups, but only if they genuinely abandon criminal activities and embrace peace.

According to Obi, lasting security cannot be achieved through force alone. He argued that individuals willing to renounce violence should be given an opportunity for rehabilitation, reconciliation, and reintegration into society. However, he maintained that criminal groups that refuse to lay down their arms and continue terrorizing communities would face decisive action from the government.

The former Anambra State governor emphasized that national unity and stability require creating pathways for repentant offenders to become productive citizens while ensuring that hardened criminals are dealt with firmly.

His remarks have generated mixed reactions across the country. While some Nigerians believe dialogue could help reduce violence and foster long-term peace, others argue that negotiating with bandits may encourage criminality and undermine justice for victims.
