Trump-Meloni Rift Deepens: Italy Cancels U.S. Visit After Explosive Remarks Spark Diplomatic Storm

A fresh diplomatic dispute has erupted between the United States and Italy after President Donald Trump made controversial comments about Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, prompting a strong backlash from Rome.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on Friday that he was canceling a planned trip to the United States, where he was scheduled to meet Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Tajani described Trump’s reported remarks as “offensive,” while Meloni dismissed them as “completely fabricated.”

The dispute comes amid growing tensions between Washington and several European allies, despite recent efforts to mend relations during the G7 summit in France.

In an interview with Italy’s La7 TV, Trump reportedly claimed that Meloni had “begged” him for a photo at the summit and that he agreed only because he felt sorry for her. The comments, translated and aired by the Italian broadcaster, quickly triggered outrage in Italy.

Responding in a video posted on X, Meloni firmly rejected the claims.

“Donald Trump’s statements are completely fabricated. I’m frankly shocked,” she said. “I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves this way toward his allies, and it’s not the first time.”

The Italian leader further criticized Trump for what she described as a softer approach toward adversaries of the West while publicly targeting allies.

“But you must remember one thing: Italy and I never beg,” Meloni declared.

Tajani had been expected to travel to Miami next week for the Italy-U.S. Business, Investment, Science and Innovation Forum. According to the U.S. State Department, his meeting with Rubio was intended to strengthen bilateral cooperation on economic security and critical minerals.

This latest clash adds to a series of disagreements between Trump and Meloni. Earlier this year, Meloni condemned Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo XIV over his opposition to the Iran war, calling the remarks unacceptable. Trump later accused Italy of failing to adequately support the United States during the conflict.

Despite once being viewed as Trump’s closest ally in Western Europe, Meloni’s relationship with the U.S. president has become increasingly strained, particularly over her refusal to join military action against Iran.

The breakdown marks a significant shift in a partnership that had been built on shared conservative values, tough immigration policies, and a strong emphasis on national sovereignty.
