UK Court Jails Nigerian Student for Attempted Rape, Orders Deportation After Prison Term

A Nigerian student living in the United Kingdom, Qudus Ajeyemi, has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison after being convicted of attempted rape and sexual assault against a woman in Hull.
Ajeyemi, 27, popularly known as "Spartan," was found guilty following a six-day trial at Hull Crown Court. At the time of the offence in early 2023, he was residing on May Street, Hull, on a student visa.

The court heard that the victim had attended a gathering on Tavistock Street after a night out and, after consuming alcohol, became unwell. Ajeyemi offered her a room to rest and led her upstairs. However, shortly after she lay down, he allegedly began touching her inappropriately.

Despite the woman clearly telling him, “I’m not here for that,” and pushing him away, Ajeyemi continued his advances. Distressed, she managed to escape downstairs and broke down in tears.

Prosecutors revealed that Ajeyemi later contacted the victim via FaceTime, admitted his actions, repeatedly apologized, and sent follow-up messages seeking forgiveness. The victim preserved the conversations and submitted them to police, prompting an investigation by Humberside Police.

Following his conviction, Ajeyemi was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison. The court also ordered that he be deported to Nigeria upon completion of his sentence, placed him on the Sex Offenders Register for life, and imposed a seven-year restraining order.

Detective Sergeant Ethan Anderson praised the victim's courage in reporting the incident, describing her actions as brave and instrumental in securing justice. He emphasized that sexual offences are treated with utmost seriousness and reaffirmed the commitment of law enforcement to removing offenders from the streets.
