Visa Drama Clouds Iranian Star’s World Cup Journey as US Entry Permit Expires
Iran’s World Cup campaign has been hit by fresh uncertainty after winger Mehdi Torabi reportedly saw his United States visa expire following Team Melli’s opening match against New Zealand.
According to Iranian state media, Torabi was issued only a single-entry visa, unlike his teammates who received multiple-entry permits for the tournament. The visa expired after Iran’s 2-2 draw with New Zealand in Los Angeles, raising concerns over his availability for the remainder of the competition.
State news agency IRNA reported that the Iranian Football Federation has already begun efforts to secure a new visa for the winger, hoping he can rejoin the squad for upcoming matches.
The issue comes amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between Iran and the United States, which have complicated travel arrangements for Iran’s delegation throughout the tournament. Iran had previously relocated its World Cup base to Mexico due to security concerns and now faces repeated travel between host cities.
Reports also indicate that around 15 members of Iran’s delegation were denied US visas, while captain Mehdi Taremi and a staff member reportedly encountered difficulties at Los Angeles International Airport following the New Zealand match.
Despite the challenges, Iran remains focused on its World Cup campaign. Team Melli will face Belgium in Los Angeles on Sunday before taking on Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
With crucial group-stage matches approaching, all eyes will be on whether Torabi can resolve his visa situation in time to continue representing his nation on football’s biggest stage.
