Darline Graham Nordone Sworn In as Interim South Carolina Senator Following Lindsey Graham's Death
Columbia, South Carolina — Darline Graham Nordone has officially been sworn in as South Carolina's interim U.S. senator, succeeding her late brother, Senator Lindsey Graham, in one of the state's most significant political transitions.
Governor Henry McMaster appointed Nordone to serve the remainder of Graham's Senate term after receiving strong backing from President Donald Trump, Senator Tim Scott, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune.
The appointment has drawn nationwide attention, not only because of its political significance but also because of the remarkable family story behind it.
Years before becoming one of America's best-known Republican senators, Lindsey Graham made an extraordinary sacrifice. At just 22 years old, he legally adopted his 13-year-old sister, Darline Graham Nordone, after their parents died only 15 months apart. His decision ensured the family remained together during one of the most difficult periods of their lives.
Throughout Graham's political career, Nordone remained one of his closest supporters, regularly attending campaign events, public appearances, and official functions while staying largely out of the national spotlight.
As interim senator, Nordone will represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate until voters elect a permanent successor.
The race to fill the seat permanently begins with the Republican primary on August 11, followed by the November general election, where South Carolinians will decide who will complete the remainder of the Senate term.
Nordone's appointment marks the continuation of a family legacy rooted in sacrifice, resilience, and public service while ensuring South Carolina maintains representation during the transition.
