Colombia Midfielder Jáminton Campaz Receives Death Threats After World Cup 2026 Elimination
Colombia midfielder Jáminton Campaz and members of his family have reportedly received death threats following the country's heartbreaking exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The threats came after Colombia were eliminated by Switzerland in a penalty shootout in the Round of 16. During extra time, Campaz, who plays for Argentine club Rosario Central, missed a crucial scoring opportunity when his shot went wide.

Following the defeat, the midfielder's social media accounts were flooded with abusive messages and death threats. As a precaution, Campaz restricted comments on his accounts and reportedly did not return home with the rest of the Colombian squad.

The Colombian Football Federation (FCF) strongly condemned the threats, stressing that no player or member of their family should face intimidation for representing their country.

«"No athlete, nor any member of their inner circle, should be subjected to intimidation for representing their country in a sporting arena," the federation said.»

The federation has also urged Colombia's Attorney General's Office to swiftly investigate the threats and bring those responsible to justice.

Breaking his silence, Campaz shared an emotional message on Instagram alongside a photo of himself covering his face in disappointment.

«"Football is also made up of difficult moments. My Colombia, please let us never lose sight of respect. We may think differently or feel frustration and sadness, but no passion justifies hatred or living in fear."»

The incident has drawn painful comparisons to one of the darkest moments in Colombian football history. In 1994, defender Andrés Escobar was tragically murdered after scoring an own goal during the FIFA World Cup in the United States.

While football often brings intense emotions, threats and violence should never be part of the game. Players deserve support and respect, regardless of the outcome on the pitch.
