David Umahi Confirms Mary Habila Died at His Ebonyi Residence, Calls for Autopsy Amid Growing Public Questions
Nigeria's Minister of Works, David Umahi, has officially confirmed that Mary Habila died inside his private residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State, as public interest and calls for transparency continue to grow.
The minister disclosed that Habila was a physiotherapist who had been seconded from the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) to the Federal Ministry of Works, where she had reportedly served for the past three years.

Umahi Speaks on Mary Habila's Death

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze, Umahi described Habila's death as a tragic and deeply painful incident.

According to the minister, emergency medical personnel were immediately contacted after Habila became unresponsive. He added that the Chief Medical Director of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences was informed without delay, while the Nigerian Police were also notified to commence the necessary legal procedures.

Umahi said he later met with Habila's parents to express his condolences and advised them to approve an autopsy, describing it as the most reliable way to establish the exact cause of death.

Minister Insists Autopsy Is Necessary

Addressing the growing public attention surrounding the case, Umahi reiterated that a comprehensive autopsy remains the best path toward uncovering the truth.

He explained that scientific findings from an autopsy would help eliminate speculation and provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding Habila's death.

The minister also appealed to Nigerians to avoid spreading unverified claims while allowing medical experts and law enforcement agencies to carry out an impartial investigation.

Who Was Mary Habila?

Umahi stated that both Mary Habila and Anita Baski were qualified physiotherapists employed by the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences before being seconded to the Federal Ministry of Works.

Their assignment reportedly lasted for about three years before the unfortunate incident that claimed Habila's life.

Earlier Reports Raise Questions

The confirmation follows earlier reports alleging that Mary Habila died under mysterious circumstances inside Umahi's country home in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Reports also claimed that the incident occurred on June 27, 2026, just a day after Habila and Anita Baski, both said to be from Kaduna State, reportedly arrived at the residence.

According to reports, the matter is currently under police investigation after being transferred from the Ohaozara Divisional Police Headquarters to the Ebonyi State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Abakaliki.

Sources familiar with the investigation alleged that medical personnel were summoned after Habila was found unresponsive, while senior officials, including the Chief Medical Director of the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, were informed.

Authorities have yet to release the outcome of any forensic or investigative findings.

Investigation Continues

As investigations progress, many Nigerians continue to demand a transparent and independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Mary Habila's death.

The outcome of the proposed autopsy and the police investigation is expected to provide answers to the many questions that have fueled public debate.
