Sultanate Council Urges Nigerian Muslims to Look Out for Safar 1448AH Moon on July 14
The Sultanate Council of Sokoto has officially called on Muslims across Nigeria to observe the new moon of Safar 1448AH on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, which corresponds to the 29th day of Muharram 1448AH in the Islamic calendar.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu.

According to the council, Muslims who successfully sight the crescent moon are encouraged to immediately report the sighting to the nearest District Head or Village Head. The reports will then be forwarded to the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, who will make the official declaration on the beginning of the month of Safar.

The statement read:

"Tuesday, 14th July, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Muharram 1448AH, shall be the day to look for the new moon of Safar 1448AH."

It further urged Muslims nationwide to participate in the moon-sighting exercise, emphasizing that the commencement of every new Islamic month depends on verified sightings received from different parts of the country.

Prof. Junaidu also offered prayers for a successful exercise, saying:

"May Allah (SWT) help us in the discharge of this religious duty. Amen."

Why the Moon Sighting Matters

The moon-sighting tradition is a vital part of the Islamic faith, marking the beginning of each lunar month. In Nigeria, the Sultanate Council of Sokoto coordinates the nationwide process, while the Sultan of Sokoto announces the official start of the new month after confirming credible reports from across the country.

Muslims are encouraged to remain attentive on Tuesday evening and promptly report any confirmed sighting through the approved traditional channels.
