David Umahi Speaks on Mary Habila's Death, Reveals New Details as Nigerians Demand Independent Investigation
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has broken his silence on the death of Mary Habila, a healthcare worker who died at his residence in Uburu, Ebonyi State, revealing new details about her health, employment, and final moments.
Habila, an employee of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, died on June 27, 2026, at the minister's country home. Her death has sparked nationwide reactions, with many Nigerians calling for a transparent and independent investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
"She Was Like a Daughter to My Family" – Umahi
Speaking during a press briefing on Thursday, Umahi described Habila as someone who had worked closely with him for about three years.
According to the minister, she was more than a staff member and was regarded as a daughter by him and his family.
He also clarified reports about her profession, stating that Habila was employed as a nurse at the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences and not a physiotherapist, as widely reported in some quarters.
Minister Reveals She Had an Existing Medical Condition
Umahi disclosed that Habila had been receiving treatment for an existing health condition at a hospital in Turkey, adding that he personally covered the cost of her medical care.
He further revealed that shortly before her death, Habila reportedly spoke with her boyfriend and complained of nose bleeding, a detail he believes is important to understanding the events leading to her passing.
Friend Recounts Mary Habila's Final Hours
Fresh details have also emerged from an affidavit sworn before the Ebonyi State High Court by Anita Baaki, a close friend and colleague of the deceased.
According to the affidavit, Baaki travelled with Habila and other ministry staff from Abuja to Ebonyi on June 24, 2026, for official assignments.
They were accommodated in adjoining rooms at a staff chalet within the minister's country home in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area.
Baaki stated that she last saw Habila alive on the evening of June 26, after she returned from having her hair done.
According to her statement, Habila visited her room and said she felt exhausted.
«"Mary told me she was tired and wanted to take a shower before sleeping. That was the last time I saw her alive."»
Baaki said she became worried the following morning when Habila did not come out of her room as expected.
Investigation Continues
The circumstances surrounding Mary Habila's death remain the subject of public scrutiny. Civil society groups, legal experts, and many Nigerians have continued to call for a thorough, transparent, and independent investigation.
At the time of writing, no official investigation has publicly established the exact cause of her death. Authorities are expected to rely on medical reports, forensic findings, witness testimonies, and other evidence before reaching any final conclusion.
Final Thoughts
David Umahi's latest statement provides additional context regarding Mary Habila's health and final hours. However, many Nigerians believe only a comprehensive and impartial investigation can provide definitive answers and strengthen public confidence.
