Ecuador Introduces Pet-Friendly Weddings as Dogs and Cats Become Symbolic Witnesses at Civil Ceremonies
QUITO, Ecuador — A heartwarming new wedding tradition is capturing global attention as Ecuador officially allows dogs and cats to serve as symbolic witnesses during civil wedding ceremonies.
Since the launch of the pet-friendly wedding initiative in May by Ecuador's Civil Registry, more than 50 couples have chosen to include their beloved pets in one of the most important moments of their lives.

How Ecuador's Pet-Friendly Weddings Work

Under the new program, couples can have their furry companions leave a paw print on a symbolic marriage certificate alongside the signatures of the bride, groom, and official human witnesses.

While the paw print has no legal authority, it serves as a cherished keepsake celebrating the deep emotional bond between families and their pets.

Luna the Pekingese Steals the Spotlight

One of the most touching ceremonies featured newlyweds Diana Tupiza and Andres Alquinga, whose beloved Pekingese dog, Luna, became their symbolic wedding witness in Quito.

Dressed in an elegant pink tulle gown, Luna proudly placed her paw print on the commemorative certificate, creating an unforgettable moment for the couple and their guests.

"Having Luna here is really spectacular," Tupiza said after the ceremony.

Her husband, Andres Alquinga, explained that pets are much more than animals—they are family.

«"Animals may not be able to speak to us or give us advice, but they are always there to give us all the love they have."»

A Tradition That Reflects Modern Families

Even Tupiza's mother, Luz Lima, who initially questioned the idea, eventually embraced the concept. She even designed and sewed Luna's beautiful wedding dress herself.

Recalling her first reaction, Lima joked that she believed witnesses should be "someone who knows what they're signing."

Later, she smiled and admitted:

«"These are modern times."»

Ecuador Says Families Are Changing

According to Otton Rivadeneira, Director of Ecuador's Civil Registry, the initiative reflects how modern families increasingly consider pets as true family members.

"We're definitely adapting to these current, modern needs," Rivadeneira said.

The latest national census supports that shift. Ecuador's population of 19 million people includes approximately 7.6 million dog and cat owners—nearly twice the number of children aged 12 and younger.

Pets Leave a Lasting Memory

Following each ceremony, pets stamp their paw onto a document titled "Symbolic Marriage Certificate," creating a lifelong memory for couples who see their four-legged companions as part of the family.

Tupiza, who owns three dogs and one cat, said she wished every one of her pets could have attended the celebration.

"For me, it would have been wonderful if they all could have been here. Luna represents both the pets who are with us today and those who are watching over us from heaven."

Why This Story Is Going Viral

Ecuador's pet-friendly weddings are winning hearts worldwide because they celebrate the growing recognition that pets are more than companions—they're family. As more countries embrace pet-inclusive lifestyles, this unique initiative could inspire similar traditions around the globe.
