Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has officially launched the North-West Zone of the National Community Food Bank Programme in Jigawa State, reaffirming her commitment to tackling food insecurity, empowering women entrepreneurs, and strengthening grassroots economic development across the country.

The launch marks another major milestone in the Federal Government's nationwide effort to improve food access for vulnerable households while supporting sustainable economic growth through targeted empowerment programmes.

Food Bank Programme Records Early Success

Speaking during the launch, Senator Oluremi Tinubu revealed that the National Community Food Bank Programme, which was first introduced in Borno State in April, has already delivered encouraging results.

According to the First Lady:

- 560 beneficiaries have enrolled in the programme.
- 468 vulnerable children have already received support.

She described the figures as an impressive beginning and stressed that the programme's long-term success depends on collaboration among government agencies, development partners, private organisations and local communities.

«"We must work together to build a transparent, accountable, and efficient food bank system that reaches vulnerable households across Nigeria," she said.»

She also called on individuals, institutions, non-governmental organisations and international development partners across the North-West to actively support the initiative as it expands nationwide.

Why Jigawa Was Chosen

The First Lady explained that Jigawa State was strategically selected for the North-West launch because of its vast agricultural potential and strong commitment to improving the welfare of its people.

She noted that the state's agricultural strength makes it an ideal location for promoting food security initiatives capable of benefiting thousands of vulnerable families.

₦100 Million Grant for 2,000 Women Traders

Before the official launch, Senator Oluremi Tinubu visited the Emir of Hadejia, His Royal Highness Dr. Adamu Maje, where she commissioned the newly constructed palace hall.

During the visit, she announced a ₦100 million Business Recapitalisation Grant aimed at supporting 2,000 women petty traders across Jigawa State.

The empowerment package is being implemented through the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme.

Each beneficiary will receive:

- ₦50,000 business recapitalisation grant
- Financial support to expand existing small businesses
- Assistance aimed at improving household income and economic stability

Empowering Women, Growing Nigeria's Economy

Senator Oluremi Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening Nigeria's small and medium-scale enterprise (SME) sector, describing women-owned businesses as vital contributors to economic growth, employment creation and poverty reduction.

According to the First Lady, empowering women entrepreneurs—especially those operating at the grassroots level—will help stimulate local economies while improving the living standards of families across the country.

She emphasized that investing in women remains one of the most effective strategies for achieving inclusive and sustainable national development.

As part of her official visit, the First Lady also inaugurated several landmark projects designed to improve healthcare, education, technology and infrastructure in the state.

The commissioned projects include:
