Meta has announced plans to build a $9 billion artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Alberta, Canada, in what officials describe as one of the largest private-sector investments in the country's history.

The announcement was made in Calgary by Meta's Vice President for Data Center Development, Gary Demasi, alongside Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. Demasi revealed that the new facility will become Meta's largest data center outside the United States, highlighting the company's aggressive expansion of its global AI infrastructure.

Meta's Largest AI Data Center Outside the U.S.

The massive facility will be constructed in Sturgeon County, Alberta, covering approximately 2.9 million square feet (269,419 square meters).

According to Meta, the project is designed to power the company's growing artificial intelligence services, which require enormous computing capacity to support advanced AI models across platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and other Meta products.

Alberta Wins Major AI Investment

Premier Danielle Smith said Alberta's competitive advantages made it the ideal location for the multibillion-dollar project.

She cited the province's affordable electricity, reliable and flexible power generation, cool climate, and highly skilled workforce as key reasons Meta selected Alberta for the investment.

"The global race for computing power is accelerating like never before," Smith said during the announcement.

Wearing a cowboy hat in celebration of the ongoing Calgary Stampede, she described the project as one of the largest private-sector investments ever made in Canada.

Thousands of Jobs and Millions in Economic Benefits

The Alberta government expects the project to create several thousand Canadian jobs during construction and operation.

Officials also estimate the data center will generate approximately $175 million in annual economic benefits for Albertans through employment, local business opportunities, and long-term investment.

The project further strengthens Alberta's position as a rapidly growing destination for global technology and AI infrastructure.

Meta's Massive AI Expansion Continues

The announcement comes as Meta significantly increases spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure to compete with other leading AI companies.

Across North America, technology giants are investing tens of billions of dollars in new data centers to support next-generation AI models, cloud computing, and advanced digital services.

The rapid growth reflects the intensifying global competition to dominate artificial intelligence development.

Data Centers Face Growing Environmental Concerns

Despite the economic benefits, large-scale data centers continue to attract criticism from environmental groups and local communities.

Critics argue that AI data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity, place additional pressure on power grids, require significant water resources for cooling, generate noise pollution, and often create fewer permanent jobs than expected after construction.

These concerns have prompted lawmakers in several U.S. states to reconsider large-scale data center development.

Last month, lawmakers in New York approved a one-year moratorium on new data center construction, while a similar proposal passed in Maine earlier this year before being vetoed by the state's governor.

AI Infrastructure Race Intensifies

Meta's $9 billion investment underscores the growing importance of AI infrastructure as technology companies compete to build the computing power needed for future innovations.

With its largest international AI data center now headed to Alberta, Meta is making one of its biggest bets yet on the future of artificial intelligence while positioning Canada as a key hub in the rapidly expanding global AI ecosystem.
