Nigeria Needs God-Fearing Leaders to End Corruption, Poverty and Insecurity – Governor Siminalayi Fubara
Port Harcourt, Nigeria — Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that Nigeria's progress depends on leaders who fear God, stressing that integrity and moral values are essential to tackling corruption, poverty, insecurity, and social injustice.
The governor made the statement on Thursday while hosting the World President of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Pastor Erton Kohler, alongside his wife, Andriene Marques Kohler, their daughter, Mariana Marques Kohler, and other church leaders at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
Fubara: Nigeria's Challenges Stem From Lack of Godly Leadership
Speaking during the courtesy visit, Governor Fubara said many of Nigeria's current problems are rooted in the absence of God-fearing individuals in positions of authority.
According to him, leaders who genuinely fear God understand accountability and are less likely to abuse power or engage in corrupt practices.
«"Our country is where it is today because we lack the fear of God. If you have the fear of God, there should be a limit to what you can do because you understand the supremacy of God.»
«"But when God is not in your equation, you'll go beyond the line, and that is what has brought us to where we are today."»
He emphasized that placing people of integrity in leadership positions is crucial not only for Nigeria but for nations around the world.
Governor Praises Seventh-day Adventist Church's Investment in Education
Governor Fubara commended the Seventh-day Adventist Church for its long-standing commitment to education and leadership development.
He noted that the church has continued investing in schools and universities across Nigeria, using education as a platform to nurture responsible, disciplined, and God-fearing future leaders.
According to the governor, religious institutions should do more than preach faith—they should actively contribute to national development by producing citizens with strong moral values and leadership qualities.
«"We need the right people in the right place, prepared properly with good minds. That is what we need, not just in Nigeria but around the whole world," he stated.»
'Good Governance Can Reduce Crime'
Fubara also linked poverty, unemployment, corruption, and rising criminal activities to poor governance and economic hardship.
He argued that when citizens have access to quality education, affordable healthcare, decent housing, and fair wages, the temptation to engage in crime significantly decreases.
"If workers can earn enough to afford quality healthcare and own a home after years of service, many of the social problems and insecurity facing the country today would naturally reduce," the governor explained.
He stressed that creating opportunities and improving living standards remain essential to building a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
Fubara Appreciates Church Delegation
Governor Fubara thanked Pastor Erton Kohler and his delegation for visiting Rivers State and offering prayers for the government and its people.
He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to supporting initiatives that promote education, peace, moral values, and community development.
Seventh-day Adventist Church President Speaks
Earlier, Pastor Erton Kohler revealed that he was in Nigeria to attend a special church conference where thousands of ministers would participate in an empowerment programme designed to strengthen their capacity to serve both the church and society.
He expressed gratitude to Governor Fubara for the warm reception, describing the visit as memorable and encouraging.
Pastor Kohler also highlighted the global reach of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, noting that it has over 24 million members, more than 182,000 places of worship, and operates across 212 countries and territories worldwide.
